JCRG: What is your Derby Name and what team do you play for?
MP: Molly Python # 6'1; Co-Captain of the Pink Pistols.

JCRG: How did you Choose your Derby Name?
MP: I had a difficult time picking my name. I wasn't sure if I wanted to be a Betty, Ivanna, or Molly. Then I was looking through my music collection one day and saw the soundtrack to Monty Python. I thought it would be cool to have Python for a last name, and the Molly part just fit right in.

JCRG: So, how did you get into Roller Derby?
MP: I read an article in the Everett Herald in August 2006 about a new league starting in Snohomish County called Jet City. What really caught my eye was that the league was willing to train new skaters. I came into roller derby with absolutely no skating experience, so basic training was essential. I hated skating growing up because I hated being tall…adding another 3-4" to my height was not what I wanted. But I'm okay with it now!

JCRG: Do you have any Roller Derby Role Models or any other players you look up to?
MP: Burnett Down is definitely a role model for me in derby. She is a Rat City Rollergirl and plays for DLF and the travel team. She is also over 6' tall, and is very proficient at all positions in the sport. Watching her skate reminds me that I shouldn't view my height as a reason to limit what I can achieve.

JCRG: What is your favorite position in roller derby and why?
MP: I really enjoy jamming. I like the intensity of having to skate through a pack of girls whose primary objective is to take me out. But that isn't going to happen!

JCRG: What is your favorite song to skate to?
MP: Anything song by the Murder City Devils is my favorite song to skate to….which reminds me that we need to play them more often at practice.

JCRG: What is your favorite drink in case an admiring fan wants to buy you one some day?
MP: I am a complete margarita whore. But it has to be decent tequila, on the rocks, with salt, fresh squeezed lemons and limes, and with a splash of grand marnier and cointreau. I won't accept any of that pre-mixed crap. The perfect margarita is served at the Sante Fe Café in Seattle, and it's called "The Lovely Rita". After 3 of those the night is golden.

JCRG: What has been the biggest obstacle you've had to overcome with roller derby so far?
MP: It would be an understatement to say derby has taken over my life. Everyone says it's like having a part-time job, and that's definitely true. It's been hard for me to accept cutting back on a few other activities I love such as rock climbing, and snowboarding.

JCRG: Do you have any advice for new girls or girls looking to get into roller derby?
MP: New girls with no skating experience just need to know that it takes 2-3 hours, 2-3 nights per week for quite a few months to get the derby skills required for bouting. If you have the desire, and you can make the commitment, go for it!! It will definitely change your life. The physical therapist in me just has to remind everyone, it helps to cross train at least 2-3 days a week to avoid injury.

JCRG: What has been your best experience with roller derby so far?
MP: All of the awesome women I get to hang out with J And I have the feeling RollerCon this August will be right up there, I can't wait to meet all the rollergirls from across the country.
