SassyPants #XOXO
Team: Hula Honeys, Team Founder and Co-Captain
Position: Everything, but mostly Blocker 3, Pivot and Jammer
Favorite drink: Coffee by Day, Vitamin Water during practice, and pink girrrly girrrrl drinks with little umbrellas by night!
Brief BIO-real or derby persona:
I am a Sassy Roller Girl so Sassy Pants is a fitting name for a gal who is one part smart-ass, one part diva, who loves
vintage culture and collecting. I skate rollerderby on the Hula Honeys, a retro/tiki themed team, and am league President
and one of the Main Mommas for the Jet City Rollergirls. I have a great family consisting of a kick ass husband, 1 great
kid and 3 incrediby cute doggies(chihuahua, bichon & english bull dog). Being a Canadian, I grew up with aspirations of
being an Olympic figure skater and skated competitely until I was 14. However, shortly after becoming a teenager I was
tempted by the glamorous yet devious life of cute boys, punk rock music, tattoos, fast cars and eventually found all of
this in the good ole' USA.
Hobbies:
I have so many hobbies, it'd be hard to list them all, but I am a total "vintage nut". I collect "stuff" 1920's through
1960's (mid century era mostly) clothing, housewares, knick-knacks, jewellry, cars, and almost anything. I even furnish
my house in vintage, including my prized 1950's pink kitchen. I also drive a 1955 Buick Century named Queenie. Some of
my other hobbies include: swing dancing, tattoo collecting, gardening, making hair flowers and reading biographies. Oh
and roller derby of course!
JCRG: How long have you been skating?
SP: I've been doing derby for a little more than a year now, however, my background is mostly in iceskating as a figure skater.
JCRG: What committee do you belong to, and what is your function
SP: I am President of the league and sit on the Board of Directors. I also am founder and co-captain of my fabulous team, the Hula Honeys. I also am Lead for the Events Committee and also sit on the PR Committee and Legal Committee.
JCRG: Why did you join derby?
SP: Growing up as a kid in the 70's any cool girl wanted to be a Roller Derby Queen. I used to watch Derby every
Saturday morning. When Rat City was advertising tryouts a few years back, I thought "ohhhhh pursue your dream Sassy", but
thought I was too old. When a good friend of mine (Ruby Ruckus) helped found Jet City, she talked me into coming out,
telling me I was not too old. I fell in love with it after the first practice and here I am today!
JCRG: What is your favorite aspect of derby?
SP: Derby for me is the perfect recipe. Its one part athleticism, one part kitsch and one part pure female empowerment.
Throw in a pinch of showmanship, individuality, and top it with a sugar coated topping of cuteness and bad-ass'ness' and you
have the perfect sport!!!
JCRG: Do you have a favorite derby player outside of Jet City?
SP: I like the old roller derby gals of yesteryear. I loved watching Joanie Weston, the "Blonde Bomber" do her thing!
But I also love watching some of the skaters who have been around for a few years in the "new" derby and watching them work
their magic. Pia Mess holds a special place in my heart because besides skating for Rat City Rollergirls and kicking ass,
she's my coach. My other inspiration is Bettie Ford Galaxy because she's just an awesome person, she does so much for others,
and she has the showmanship down to a perfect science!
