Connie Torturous
Team: CarnEvil
Position: Contorted. On skates: Jammer, blocker, pivot.
Favorite drink: Draft beer. Not bottled or canned. Draft. (Or tasty things with vodka in them.)
JCRG: How did you come up with your derby name and what does it mean to you?
CT: I waited until I got place on my team – CarnEvil! After much brainstorming with friends I finally landed on Connie Torturous – like contortionist – I know it’s a stretch. It was appropriate because I like to torture other skaters.
JCRG: How long have you been skating?
CT: On and off for a long time. I always had a pair of in-lines in my car’s trunk. Once when I was stuck in traffic in Chicago, I pulled over and skated along the lake for a couple hours. I just got back on quads a year ago.
JCRG: What do you do in your non-derby life (for fun and/or for work)?
CT: I’m a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood and a general hell raiser for women’s rights. When not skating, I’m dancing, hiking, dancing, drinking draft beer, dancing or skating outdoors.
Hobbies
Well, now that I’ve joined derby, my job is my hobby. But I also like traveling to places the State Department won’t let you, enjoy art in all its manifestations and anything that involves nature or bowling with kittens.
JCRG: What committee do you belong to, and what is your function?
CT: I’m the Sponsorship and Fundraising Committee Chair (I’ll take your donation now.) I do some work on bout production but my greatest pain (and pleasure) is being the captain of CarnEvil – we’re a bunch of super sweet badasses.
JCRG: Why did you join derby?
CT: I went to a Rat City bout and just absolutely had to do it! While in line to use a Honey Bucket, I was talking to a gal (who is now Psychopathic Chic) who told me about a league getting started in Tacoma. I skated with them for a while until I realized that the 100 mile commute was nuts. I decided to join PFM and now, here I am. I’m a bit of a derby whore, eh?
JCRG: What is your favorite aspect of derby?
CT: The sisterhood! I love the derby sisterhood and appreciate what it has done for many women – given them the strength and courage to do things they never dreamed (myself included.)
JCRG: Do you have a favorite derby player outside of Jet City?
CT: Hmmm… my favorite player has changed as I’ve learned more about the game. I’ve always been a big fan of Rat City’s Pris Toff (Throttle Rockets) and Miss Fortune (Socket Wenches) as both jammers and all around athletes. More recently I got to see Jawbreaker from the Minnesota Rollergirls in action and she’s amazing! Goody-Two Skates (Rose City) also cracks me up – I hope to be as comfortable on my skates as she is, someday.
