Number: 523.78, the Dewey Decimal number for solar eclipse.
Team: Camaro Harem AND The Bombers!
Position: Each one except Pivot, (so far)!
Favorite drink: Water
Hobbies: Roller Derby, pushing people (especially girls) around, making wise-cracks, fat kitties, and trying to play better roller derby.
JCRG: How did you come up with your derby name and what does it mean to you?
MU: At home I'm known as Sunshine, which started because my spouse wanted to call me something other than "Honey" or "Babe." He came up with Sunshine, to which I've always protested, because I am a mean, hard, and cold person so I feel sunshine doesn't describe me-- I've maintained that my name is really "unshine." The Missus part came about because I felt I needed a two-word derby name, and "Missus" tricks people's brains into reading my name as Miss Sunshine (although I admit that this now gets on my nerves). It also alludes to the fact that I miss the sunshine--I'm not from here and I'm not used to how infrequently the sun comes out.
JCRG: How long have you been skating?
MU: I taught myself how to skate in my parents' basement when I was in 3rd or 4th grade, and I actually took an after-school roller skating class around that time. But I never pursued skating seriously until I started coming to Jet City practices in September 2007.
JCRG: What committee do you belong to, and what is your function?
MU: I just took over for Ivana Hercha as the lead for Bout Production. This means I oversee and facilitate everything that has to do with putting on a bout...everything from facility issues, ticket prices and sales, getting our floor set-up and then packed away, making sure we have volunteer security and EMT's, making sure we have enough supplies like floor tape, wrangling our volunteer scorekeepers and announcers, hanging up signs and keeping aisles clear, supporting other charitable organizations, getting a designer for our awesome bout flyers and programs, and of course the after party! I just oversee the process and try to help facilitate everything--as you might imagine, there are a ton of people involved in making our bouts happen and they are all awesome! (If you are reading this and want to volunteer, email volunteers@jetcityrollergirls.com! You could get into our bouts for free!!) When I can, I also help out with ad-hoc events and fundraisers, and I maintain the League's Facebook page. I'm also on Camaro Harem's bout intro committee.
JCRG: Why did you join derby?
MU: Lord knows I didn't know what I was getting into. I saw Jet City in the 2007 4th of July parade in Everett, and as you can see from my answer above, it took me a few weeks to work up the nerve to contact Suzi9mm. I was drawn to the coolness and toughness of the sport--it's so smart and animalistic and base all at once.
JCRG: What is your favorite aspect of derby?
MU: I love derby because it is so not corporate. When you support your local roller girl, you really are supporting something that is meaningful and has a positive impact in your own community. Derby encourages women to take risks--on the floor and off--and derby will support them in those risks. In Derby, women learn what they are capable of, usually that they are capable of more than they ever thought--whether in a leadership, teamwork, or sports-womanship role.
JCRG: Any other information we should know about you?
MU: I may seem sweet, but my heart is black.
