Double D'Ablo

Number: 13
Team: CarnEvil
Position: B1
Favorite drink: sparkling organic lemonade
Hobbies: gardening, camping, and DERBY!

JCRG: How did you come up with your derby name and what does it mean to you?
DD:I fussed with a whole bunch of name possibilities.  It was really tough for me to choose something appropriate - I have a dirty sense of humor.  Double D is a reference to the fact that women come in all shapes and sizes, and that buxom women play derby too!  In fact, my favorite skaters tend to be big juicy blockers!  The D'Ablo part pays homage to my ornery side, plus my family speaks spanish so it fits!

JCRG: How long have you been skating?
DD: Since my first day of Booty Camp in September of 2009.  I was a wobbly one (ok, I'm still kinda a wobbly one)!

JCRG: What committee do you belong to, and what is your function?
DD: I am on Bout Production Committee, where I format the bout program along with Ally Kazaam.  I really value featuring the skaters, since we are a skater run league, so it's been my focus to give them a spotlight in layouts like Derby Little Secrets, as well as creating rosters for visiting teams.  I also put together the announcer bits: a document that the announcers use during bouts to share relavant info with the fans from line ups to featured charity of the night.  I do worker bee stuff too, like bring the large fans and the couch for the Sofa King Awesome raffle to each bout.  I am on the Skater Relations Committee where myself and a group of skaters and DEA focus on intraleague conflict resolution - we run a tight ship, but we still have our issues!  I am the Boutcast Lead along with Marilyn GunHoe.  We work with DNN and volunteers to get JCRG bouts textcasted and featured on DNN for fans across the nation - this to me is super exciting!  Finally, I'm also the Volunteer Coordinator for the league.  I assign the general public who volunteer off the JCRG website to various shifts on bout day.  I love having a chance to get to know fans.  JCRG fans are so dedicated and helpful - we couldn't ever compete without them!

JCRG: Why did you join derby?
DD: I wanted to change my life and be healthier, from the inside out.  I've never done anything for ME.  I also felst a strong need to push myself outside of my comfort zone - challenge myself to do something I thought might not be possible.  I also wanted to be a part of the camaraderie and sisterhood - that aspect of Jet City in particular really appealed to me.

JCRG: What is your favorite aspect of derby?
DD: I LOVE the teamwork, cohesion and the obligation that veteran skaters seem to feel toward fresh meat.  Jet City is so incredibly supportive.  I've hit a lot of brick walls with injuries my first season, and a lot of plateaus with skill - yet it never ceases to amaze me when a phenomenal skater like Ally Kazaam, Suzi 9 mm, or Mile High Mary (my Derby Mama) will skate next to me, coaching me to push myself, believe in myself, and to remember that every skater was a beginner.  I don't have a lot of local family, and this is the first time that I really feel like I have a large extended family, I love it!  It's like having 60 sisters.  It's an incredible experience.  No matter how long I'm an active skater, the empowerment and the relationships will stay with me forever.

JCRG: Any other information we should know about you?
DD: Jet City has really changed my life yet aside from that I really forget that I'm not just a fan. Seriously, I love Jet City.  And when I say that, I mean that from a total fanatic perspective!  I still kinda wig out when I'm scrimmaging with skaters like Angelica, Precious, Torture, Trixxxie or Star and so many others.  I guess I'll always be a Jet City fan first and foremost.  It's surreal falling in love with the sport on the sidelines, and then having the opportunity to actually be a part of it!
